Are You Working Past 65

If you’re still working at 65 and have access to health benefits through your employer, or your spouse’s employer, you may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare without penalty if your employer offers creditable coverage. If your employer has 20 or more employees you can delay enrollment, but if your employer has less than 20 employees, you will likely need to enroll in Medicare. Your employer may require spouses to enroll in Medicare at age 65, you need to check with your employer’s HR department to learn more about your specific options.

Medicare Part A is free for most poeple so there’s no point in delaying that unless you have a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you have an HSA, and you plan to enroll in Medicare, both you and your employer should stop contrubtions at least six months before you apply for Medicare to prevent tax headaches.

At Hartman Insurance Services we are happy to meet with you before you decide to retire. We will help you compare your employer coverage to your Medicare options.
