Self-Care
Tips for Heart Health

February is Healthy Heart month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but there’s a lot you can do to prevent it. We want to offer you some self-care tips to help you reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

What is “self-care”?

Self-care is what you do to care for any health problems you have, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or mental health disorders. Part of self-care is knowing your health status. Even during uncertain and busy times, get your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels checked. Talk with your doctor about your heart health.

What can you do for self-care?

Self-care for your heart is really self-care for your whole self. Consider adding the following to your daily routine:

  1. Get moving. Get a daily dose of physical activity such as a brisk walk or be silly and dance in your living room. A body in motion stays in motion.
  2. Cook meals that are low in sodium and unhealthy fats. Have snacks on hand like fruit and vegetables. Click here to get heart-healthy recipes from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s website.
  3. Take your medications as prescribed and keep your medical appointments. Organize your medications.
  4. Sleep 7-8 hours a night.
  5. Mange stress through doing things you like, for example, reading a good book, watching a funny movie, taking a warm bath, or meditation. Try practicing mindfulness exercises.
