What is long-term care?
Long-term care is a range of services and support for your personal care needs. Most long-term care helps with basic personal tasks of everyday life like dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom. Medicare and most health insurances do not cover long-term care expenses. You can get long-term care at home, in the community, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing home. It’s important to start planning for long-term care now to maintain your independence and to make sure you get the care you may need, in the setting you want, now and in the future.
Various Options of Long-Term Care Facilities
Nursing homes – gives residents 24 hours a day medical care.
Assisted living – nonmedical facilities for older adults who need some help with daily life. They are healthy and active but need help with medication and housekeeping.
Residential care homes – smaller form of assisted living. Usually less than 20 rooms.
Memory care – typically offered in units attached to assisted living facilities and nursing homes. This is for adults diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease who can no longer live on their own.
Continuing care retirement communities – combine different levels of care on one campus.
Veterans care – They may stay at regular nursing homes on contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs or at homes operated by the VA. They may also be able to use certain funds to pay for assisted living and home care.
